Make Good Choices
Okay so today I want to talk about how to make good choices. This is something that I say a lot and I really believe in it. I mean, I believe in this with all of my being. This is something that way more people need to realize and I believe when they do realize it, it will boost their confidence, up their game, and put them a position of advantage over the people who do not realize it.
Do you know what I’m talking about? I’m talking about the fact that YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOU. You have the power to make good choices.
This means that you AND ONLY YOU decide how you are going to feel, what you are going to do, and the direction that your life is going to move in so make good choices. It’s true. So life is always moving around us, right? I mean, things happen. A lot of things that happen around us and even to us are out of our control. That’s a fact. However, the way that you let what happens effect you is completely up to you.
You decide whether you are going to let a temporary set back like not making the team at tryouts or not getting that promotion that you want at work just CRUSH your spirits and make you give up or whether that temporary setback is going to make you step back, re-evaluate, work smarter, work harder, continue to make good choices and put in even more effort to try again. It’s fair to say that if you don’t try you definitely won’t get what you want. Keep in mind that when I say, try again that may mean again and again and again. I mean, after all, sometimes life throws you A LOT at you.
Temporary setbacks ARE NOT DEFEAT. YOU ARE NOT DEFEATED. You decide how you are going to let yourself feel about what happens to you in this life and how you are going to handle it moving forward. Make good choices. Being upset or disappointed with an outcome is fine. There is nothing wrong with it as long as you don’t let it last. You need to feel the disappointment, feel the pain, and then pick yourself up and prepare to try again. FEEL AND FACE. Feel it and then turn around and face it.
Now another thing I said in the beginning of this post is that YOU DECIDE WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO. It’s your choice so make good choices. You may be thinking that this is wrong because you may be a student and you may have to go to school every day or you may have rules at home that you have to follow. Or you may be an adult with a job and responsibilities. You may think that your school, your parents, your job, or your boss decides what you are going to do. I feel that a lot of people out there are confused about this.
Those things do take up some of your time, maybe a lot of your time, and they do require you to do certain things and behave certain ways. However, you are still in control of what you do. Let me give you an example. You may have a job, you have to go to work Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. What are you going to do while you are at work? Well you could give it the best of you, do your best work while you’re there or you could slack off, just squeak by, and always have your boss on top of you reminding you to get things done. I mean, the choice is yours after all. Make good choices. If you really want to get deep, the choice to even work at all is up to you. Sure you have bills to pay and responsibilities to take care of but technically you could just quit working, do nothing, lose everything you own and live under a bridge, right? I mean, you probably don’t want to do that but you could.
Students, while you’re at school you can either put in your best work, pay attention in class, study, take notes, be respectful to your peers, listen to your teachers or go the other way. Right? You can get straight “A”s and you could exhibit good behavior or you can you can get “F”s and exhibit bad behavior and then be in trouble in the principal’s office all of the time. Make good choices. Obviously “A”s and good behavior is the only way to go but it really depends on the choices you make right? You could choose to go the other way. It’s your choice after all, right? So when you get those “A”s and awards for your good behavior in school, never let anyone take that accomplishment away from you. It was yours. It was your choice and your hard work and dedication that got you there.
When you win that employee-of-the-month award at work, it’s the same thing. Don’t let anyone minimize it. You earned it. You could have gone the other way. You could have just squeaked by and done the bare minimum. You made good choices. You chose to excel. Be proud of yourself.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you choose to “go the other way” and get “F”s in school and exhibit bad behavior or slack of and just barely squeak by at your job and do the wrong thing, you MUST REMEMBER that yes you can choose and although you are free to choose, you are NOT FREE from the CONSEQUENCES of your choices. All choices have consequences. Good choices are usually followed by good consequences. Bad choices… well you get it. So think about it and MAKE GOOD CHOICES.
Now that brings us to the other thing that I mentioned… YOU DECIDE THE DIRECTION THAT YOUR LIFE IS GOING TO MOVE IN.
This means you choose your short and long term goals. You choose what you want your life to look like in 1, 5, 10, 15, or 20 years or more. Next, you do the most important thing of all.
YOU MAKE THE CHOICES EACH AND EVERY DAY THAT WILL MOVE YOUR LIFE IN YOUR CHOSEN DIRECTION. I read a quote once and I don’t remember who said it. When I check with the all knowing Google, it seems many people are taking credit for it. Either way it’s s great one: SUCCESS IS NEVER OWNED. IT IS RENTED AND THE RENT IS DUE EVERYDAY. Let that sink in and make good choices everyday.
It all comes back to YOU BEING IN CONTROL OF YOU. Don’t let other people shape your life for you. They will try. Be your own person, even when you are working at a job that you don’t like or when you are going to school and thinking it’s boring. Think long term. Play the long game. DO YOUR BEST AND BE YOUR BEST WHERE YOU ARE AT RIGHT NOW. Make good choices today in order to get to where you want to be tomorrow.
Let’s read that again… DO YOUR BEST AND BE YOUR BEST WHERE YOU ARE AT RIGHT NOW. Make good choices today in order to get to where you want to be tomorrow.
Don’t think that just because you’re working a part-time job that you hate today that it means you will be there for the rest of your life. At the same time, don’t assume that you don’t need to treat people right because you’re not happy with where you are right now and then think that the choices that you make today and the way that you treat people today won’t affect your life tomorrow so make good choices today.
How you act and what you do today has a direct effect on the way your life will look tomorrow so make good choices.
YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOU. Believe it, act accordingly, and make good choices.
