You Cannot Quit
Something that I noticed about myself over time that is not very flattering but I have to bring it up here because self-reflection is healing, learning, and rebuilding plus it may help someone else. I think that I am pretty smart. I mean I believe in myself and my ideas. I have a lot of good ideas. I have had many over the years. Oh boy I have had some great ones. I even started working on some of them. I mean I stated working on turning them into something real; getting them out of my head and into the real world.
Let me tell you something about me when I get an idea in my head. I’m real passionate about it. I mean REALLY passionate about it. I get so into it. I start to devote a large portion of my time and energy to it and I go “all-in” emotionally. I mean I’m in-it-to-win-it. That is until the font gets tough and there is too much push back from life or until I think of another great idea, jump ship to that one, and start the process all over again.
Let me tell you, that really drains your energy and your will to fight for your dreams. I mean, what’s worse then putting your all into something and then putting it aside and having to put your all into something else? I’m sure there are worse things but you get where I’m going. I’ve had my fair share of amazing ideas that could have potentially been million or billion dollar ideas HAD I NOT GIVEN UP ON THEM; had I NOT QUIT.
SIDE NOTE: I’m a parent of 3 boys. I have a family. I DO NOT have the luxury of quitting even if I wanted to. Other parents understand this.
This started in my teens when I watched my first “no money down” real estate course on late night TV and ordered it with ambitions to be rich from real estate investing. Well eventually I quit that.
So guess what? I didn’t get rich from buying real estate investment properties with no money down. Don’t get me wrong, I could have given it all I had and failed and effectively been in the same place as just quitting. Right? Wrong. Read this next bit carefully. If you try your best and give it all that you have and fail, you gain experience. You gain invaluable experience that people who quit before they try will ever have. In order to win, you need to know how to fail. Failing is not losing. Failing builds character, teaches lessons, and makes you stronger than when you started. So bottom line… win or fail, but DO NOT QUIT.
So at the end of 2017 I began to follow another dream and began to learn to program java in Android Studio to make Android apps. Let me tell you I have invested countless hours into studying and practicing. I have taken courses and completed online training. I have been upset, frustrated, thought that I was just not getting it and maybe never would. I thought about quitting once or three times BUT every time I thought about it, I would make a small break through… like a bread crumb. I would keep pushing and keep typing and keep researching until I would be solving one small problem after another… that’s what programming is after all. It’s solving a series of problems until your code works. Programmers know this. Programming is a lot like life. Just when you think you have it all figured out, you don’t. You need to keep working things out and find another solution.
I will leave you with this. In programming and every other potential accomplishment in life, IF YOU QUIT, YOU WILL 100% NOT REACH YOUR GOAL. Yes you may try and fail. You may fall down and get back up time and time again and get beat up and beat down BUT if you keep going, you will either win or gain invaluable experience for your next endeavor. One more time.. IF YOU QUIT, YOU WILL 100% NOT REACH YOUR GOAL.
Remember that. It’s been two years since I started programming and it’s been no cake walk but I didn’t quit. Today I have two apps in the Google Play Store.
I have a Tip Calculator called Tip Calc: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.errolapplications.tipright&hl=en_US
I also have a Bible Reader called Bible 365: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.errolapplications.bible365kjv&hl=en_US
They are out there but always a work in progress and anything having to do with app or web development is. It’s actually a lot like life. You and the pursuit of your dreams and goals is a constant work in progress and is constantly changing and improving. Sometimes you need to take two steps back to take three steps forward but the most important thing to know is that you CANNOT you MUST NOT you DO NOT QUIT!
Blogging and making motivational YouTube videos and hopefully starting a career as a public motivational speaker is another goal and a passion of mine. I’m not gonna quit on that either.
Check the apps out if you have an Android device and thank you for the support!
